Ring of Brodgar
|
We stayed longer than intended at Skara Brae and with
the light beginning to fade decided to make haste to the
Ring of Brodgar. It is about 5.5 miles from Skara Brae leave
the B9056 at the end of the loch of Skaill and join the
B9055. The Ring of Brodgar is on a small strip of land between
the Loch of Stenness & the Loch of Harry.
The Ring of Brodgar has never been fully excavated or dated,
the monument's age remains uncertain. However, it is generally
thought to have been erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC,
and would therefore be the last of the great Neolithic monuments
built on the Ness.
The stone ring was built in a true circle, 341 ft wide,
and originally contained 60 stones. Today, only 27 of these
stones now remain.
