Standing Stones of Dumgoyach

Starting the walk from the Visitor Centre at Mugdock Country Park, go through the arch at the Stables Tearoom. Take the path to the right going past the children's play area (marked A on the map of Dumgoyach), this path goes to the rear of Craigend Castle.

Just before you reach the Castle there is a small wooden bridge, cross the bridge and take the narrow path to the road. Turn left on the road and after a short distance there is a footpath with the B821 sign, carry on down this footpath for about ¾ of a mile (1.2 km), turn left here as this path leads down to Carbeth Loch and joins up with the West Highland Way.

If you meet a large steel gate across the path you will have missed this turn. Once you reach the stile at Carbeth Loch carry straight on to the B821. Again turn left and after a short distance you will see the sign for the West Highland Way on your right.

Once over the Stone wall keep going until you are at Dumgoyach, the Standing Stones are to the right of the path. The grass is long here and a bit boggy in places. The gate to the field can be opened, remember to shut it again as it is a grazing field.

Return home the way you came until Carbeth Loch and instead of going back over the stile carry straight on the West Highland Way. At the end of the path cross the road and rejoin The West Highland Way at Mugdock Wood, follow the path until you reach a sign pointing towards the Visitor Centre.

The path is uphill until you reach Mugdock Castle (marked D on the map of Dumgoyach). The distance covered is about 7 miles (11 km), allow a least 3 hours for comfort. To cut the walk shorter you have the option of turning at the Carbeth Loch stile and returning the West Highland Way (5 miles (8 km)). The walk is quite easy with no major obstacles in the way.
